Inspired by the power of seaweed

Not many global organizations can trace their origin back to a modest vegetable garden in rural Nova Scotia, but that’s where our story begins. Among the rows of lush green plants, our Founder Louis Deveau first fell in love with seaweed.

As he watched his father gather seaweed from the rocky shoreline of La Baie St. Marie and spread the nourishing algae over the garden’s soil, Louis was mesmerized by its almost magical growing power. The ground where his father applied seaweed sprung forth with plants that were healthier and more productive.

Louis contemplated what else this incredible marine resource could do. Though he didn’t know it yet, these early daydreams would set him down the path to building a global business dedicated to improving the lives of plants, animals and people using the power of untapped and underappreciated marine resources.

The building blocks of Acadian

Inspired by the early observation of seaweed’s potential and guided by a clear vision for responsible growth, Louis Deveau set out to build a world-class organization rooted in science, quality, and sustainability. In 1981, the acquisition of the Canadian assets of Marine Colloids marked the formal launch of Acadian Seaplants and the beginning of a new chapter in seaweed innovation.

Over the decades that followed, the company expanded its harvesting expertise, product portfolio, and global reach – featuring seaweed species such as Ascophyllum nodosum and launching its first seaweed extract for plants in 1991. Through continued investment in research, resource management, market development, and people, Acadian evolved from a local enterprise into a global leader, well positioned to advance science-based solutions worldwide.

Leadership for the next chapter

As Acadian Seaplants continues to evolve, so too does our leadership – ensuring continuity of purpose while positioning the company for long-term growth and impact. Building on the strong foundation established over decades, Jean‑Paul Deveau, son of founder Louis Deveau, has assumed the role of Executive Chairman, providing strategic oversight rooted in deep knowledge of the company’s heritage and values. At the same time, Nelson Gibson, former President of Acadian Plant Health, now serves as CEO of Acadian Seaplants, bringing a proven track record of science-led innovation, global leadership, and performance-driven growth. Supporting this next phase, James Maude has been appointed Chief Operating Officer, strengthening operational excellence across the organization. Together, this leadership team reflects a thoughtful evolution — one that honors Acadian’s legacy while confidently guiding the company into its future as a global leader in seaweed science and sustainable solutions.
